Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, hut know that for all these thing God will bring you to judgment. So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body, for youth and vigor are meaningless. ECCLESIASTES 11:9-10
The evidence indicates that Solomon probably addressed the Book of Ecclesiastes to up-and-coming leaders near the beginning of their careers. In that context, he has a simple suggestion: “Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment” (Ecclesiastes 11:9).
In our culture, an unsettledness regarding career options is prevalent. People often look around and ask the question, “What should I be doing?” They’re constantly questioning their calling and wondering if they should change jobs. Such concerns frequently arise among professionals in certain age groups, particularly those who are just beginning their careers and those who are in the middle of their careers.
These questions are never articulated by people who feel they are following their dreams. Rather, they are asked by those who are in one career context but would rather be doing something else. Should I begin my own business? Should I switch to a nonprofit? Should I move over to that corporation where I could occupy that position? If I move from here to there, I will take on more risk. The results will be more uncertain. What should I do?
Solomon’s advice? Live the adventure and do what your heart desires. Simply remember in the process that whatever you do will be evaluated by God. So make sure that the choices you make regarding your career are honoring to Him. Would you feel good about standing before God and explaining your rationale for what you are thinking of doing? If the answer is yes, don’t hesitate to pursue it. If the answer is no, put it out of your mind immediately.
Life is a fantastic adventure. Enjoy every hour of it. Take risks. Follow your heart. Let your creativity take over. Just make sure in everything you do to stay inside God’s boundaries. Someday you’ll have the opportunity to explain things to Him face to face.
