Hidden in the foothills of the Himalayas, an American couple is engaging in profound projects of social entrepreneurship. From a small, artisan community in India, they are creating opportunity and stability for those in need.
Dave and Mel Murray are creating empowered communities of hope.
In 2010, Dave started Dehradun Guitar Company. He engaged the lives of nine Indian men who were once orphans, refugees and addicts. These men are now the skilled builders and craftsmen of world-class custom guitars, and are the heartbeat of Dehradun.
Mel operates JOYN, an organization that connects artisans living ‘in some of the most difficult environments in the world,’ with flourishing western markets. By providing safe work environments, education, vocational training and medical care to these artisans, the work of JOYN goes beyond the handbags, jewelry and accessories they produce. The real legacy is ‘bringing lasting JOY to communities.’
“What is so wonderfully atypical about a JOYN day is that here in India, we have the privilege of spreading JOY at every turn.” –Mel Murray
I love their work and their model. They are a billboard for the Multiple Bottom Line concept.
