She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. PROVERBS 31:25
Although the woman in Proverbs 31 is obviously quite well-to-do, we get the distinct impression, particularly from this verse, that she hasn’t placed all her hope and security in her stock portfolio and business holdings.
She can “laugh at the days to come,” meaning she doesn’t fear the problems or disasters that tomorrow may bring, because she is “clothed with strength and dignity” (v. 25). She doesn’t spend her days worrying about the future; instead, using her God-given wisdom and talents, she takes all the necessary steps to ensure that her loved ones are well-clothed, well-fed, and well-cared-for in the future. Even then, her ultimate confidence does not lie in herself and her activities; it lies in her fear of the Lord (v. 30). As a result, she truly is ready for anything.
Does the future make you nervous? Scared? Anxious? Or are you looking forward to it with great excitement and anticipation, knowing that you’ve done everything you can to prepare for it, and resting in the knowledge that no matter what happens, God will be with you?
A person who can “laugh at the days to come”—not in an arrogant, “My- wealth-will-take-care-of-me” way, but in a confident, “God-will-take-care-of-me” manner—really sticks out in our culture. A person who is clothed with strength and dignity sticks out because he or she radiates a faith and hope in Jesus that non- believing onlookers can’t help but be intrigued by.
Are there people in your office who seem scared of the future? By your attitudes and actions—by your spiritual “clothing”—you can show them a better way.
