Finally, a reminder.
In any healthy economy, there is mobility where people at the bottom are moving into the higher ranges. That’s true in the economy of generosity as well. We need to remember that a particular flow of generosity is not meant to last perpetually. It’s meant to resolve a problem.
C. S. Lewis said, ‘The proper aim of giving is to put the recipient in a state where he no longer needs our gift.” I would take that further and say that the proper aim of generosity is to put the recipient in a state where he or she can begin contributing to others. Generosity begins to look less like a one-way channel and more like a circular flow.
