Timing Is Everything

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure. For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a man’s misery weighs heavily upon him. ECCLESIASTES 8:5-6
So much of life comes down to timing. God sets the stage in our lives, and much of our energy goes into making sure what we do is in sync with the life context that God has laid out in front of us.
In Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby contends that instead of initiating action and asking God to join us, we should figure out what God is doing and join Him. Much of that comes down to timing. When we do what we know we are supposed to do is often as important as what we do.
According to Scripture, Jesus came into the world at the perfect time. He certainly was needed before He arrived. In fact, God-fearing Jews had fervently prayed for and looked forward to the coming of the Messiah for thousands of years. But His coming was perfectly aligned with a series of historical events that together set the stage for His arrival. For the first time in history, there was a common language, a road system that allowed for travel, common forms of currency, and a series of other elements that facilitated the spread of the gospel. Jesus could have come anytime, but He came at the time when the world stage was best arranged for the gospel to go out to the ends of the earth.
On a smaller scale, our lives and work often come down to a judgment regarding timing. In Acts 17:26-27, Paul says something very interesting: “From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.” God has set us very specifically in a particular time and a particular place. Neither is by chance.
Because God has thought so carefully about the where and when of our lives and our work, it makes sense that we ought to also be very aware of the timing of our actions to make sure that they are in exact alignment with what God has planned.
